The History of Kiddie Park

If you grew up in San Antonio, you’ve likely heard stories about Kiddie Park. Parents and grandparents remember it too. This children’s amusement park has been part of local life for generations, known for its simple, colorful charm.

Kiddie Park isn’t like big amusement parks. It’s built for easy, close-to-home fun. Kids enjoy kiddie park rides while parents relax nearby. Now connected to San Antonio Zoo, its story continues.

Where It All Started

Kiddie Park first opened in 1925. That makes it over a century old! It began as a small spot designed just for children, right in San Antonio. At the time, there weren’t many places built only for young kids to enjoy rides safely.

Back then, most amusement parks in San Antonio were made for older crowds. Kiddie Park changed that. It gave local families a place where little ones could ride, laugh, and feel included.

The park quickly became known for its old-fashioned charm. It didn’t try to be flashy. It focused on simple, nostalgic fun. That idea stuck through the years.

The Original Location and Early Days

Kiddie Park’s original location was near Broadway Street, close to Brackenridge Park. It sat in a cozy space that felt easy to reach for local families. Even the parking lot was simple and close by, making visits stress free.

In those early years, kids lined up for classic rides like the ferris wheel, small trains, and even a pony ride. These rides were sized just right for younger children, which made the experience feel special.

The park became a go-to spot during weekends, birthdays, and events like Fiesta. Families would stop by for a few rides, some snacks, and maybe a little face painting.

It wasn’t about big thrills. It was about joy in small moments.

The Famous Carousel

One of the most loved attractions at Kiddie Park is the carousel, and what a carousel it is! This isn’t just any ride.

It’s the historic Herschell-Spillman carousel, hand-crafted in 1918 by the Herschell-Spillman Co. in North Tonawanda, New York and brought to San Antonio in 1935. Nearly 90 years later, it’s still spinning!

This “county fair” style carousel is one of a kind. Of the original 5,000 hand-carved carousels ever made, fewer than 100 still exist today. And San Antonio has one! Master wood craftsmen carved all 36 horses and both chariots entirely by hand. No two horses are identical, making every ride a little different.

The Kiddie Park Carousel even caught the attention of the entire country! The U.S. Postal Service honored it by featuring it on a 25¢ carousel postage stamp issued in October 1989. That’s how iconic this ride truly is.

Kids climb on and hold tight as the music plays. Parents often take photos, remembering their own childhood rides. It’s one of those rare things that hasn’t lost its magic.

A Piece of Texas History

Kiddie Park isn’t just fun. It’s part of Texas history. Over the years, it has stayed true to its roots. While many parks changed or closed, Kiddie Park held on to its identity.

Even as bigger attractions opened across the country, like Disney World, Kiddie Park stayed small and local. It didn’t try to compete. It stayed focused on what it does best.

There’s even a fun connection to Walt Disney. Before Disneyland became famous, Disney visited places like Kiddie Park for inspiration. Parks like this helped shape ideas for future attractions.

Moving Forward: A New Chapter

Recently, there has been breaking news about Kiddie Park. The park moved from its original spot and is now part of San Antonio Zoo. This move helps protect its history while giving it new life.

Now, families visiting the zoo can also enjoy Kiddie Park in one trip. It blends two beloved San Antonio experiences into one easy outing.

The rides still keep their classic feel. The goal was never to change what people love. Instead, it’s about keeping it going for future generations.

What You’ll Find Today

Today’s Kiddie Park still feels like the one people remember. You’ll find:

  • Classic kiddie park rides that are simple and fun
  • A small ferris wheel perfect for young riders
  • The historic Herschell Spillman carousel
  • Bright colors and cheerful music
  • Spots for face painting during special events

It’s not overwhelming. It’s easy to walk through and easy to enjoy.

Many families also love the idea of unlimited rides. That means kids can go again and again without worrying about counting tickets.

A Favorite for Local Families

Kiddie Park has always been about community. Local families have supported it for decades. It’s one of those places where traditions get passed down.

Grandparents bring their grandkids. Parents point out the same rides they once loved. It creates a connection that’s hard to find in bigger parks.

People from all around the San Antonio area often make the trip too. It’s close enough for a day visit and different enough to feel special.

San Antonio Zoo started in the early 1900s, when a small group of animals was brought to what is now Brackenridge Park. In 1914, George W. Brackenridge donated land and animals, helping shape the zoo into what it is today.

Now, it covers more than 50 acres and includes over 700 species. It’s one of the most visited spots in Texas.

As you walk through, you’ll notice how easy it is to explore. Paths are clear, and there’s something new around every turn.

Ride the San Antonio Zoo Train

Right outside our zoo, you’ll hear a whistle and see the San Antonio Zoo train pulling into the station.

This train, also called the Brackenridge Park Zoo Train, has been a favorite for generations. It’s a miniature train, but the experience feels big.

The train is often known as the C.W.T. Express, and it connects several parts of the park. You can board near the train depot by our zoo and ride through scenic areas.

Helpful tips:

  • Buy tickets early if it’s busy
  • Sit on the open side for better views
  • Use it to move between stops instead of walking everything

The zoo train is one of the easiest ways to tie your whole day together.

Plus, here’s some good news. The train experience keeps getting even better at San Antonio Zoo.

There’s a new addition called the Warriors Heart Military Train. It honors the men and women who serve and have served, along with the many military families who are part of the San Antonio community.

It’s a simple but meaningful touch that adds a little more heart to your ride through the park.

Slow Down in Brackenridge Park

After your ride, take time to explore Brackenridge Park.

This park is one of the oldest in San Antonio. It’s full of tall trees, open fields, and quiet walking paths. The San Antonio River runs through it, adding a peaceful feel to the whole area.

There’s also a nearby golf course if you want to add something extra to your day. This part of your visit is meant to be slow. Find a shady spot, sit down, and enjoy the break.

This spot feels calm the moment you step inside. You’ll see stone bridges, koi ponds, and small waterfalls.

It’s free to visit and easy to explore. The paths are simple, and there are places to sit and take it all in. It’s also one of the most photographed places in San Antonio, so don’t forget your camera.

Kiddie Park

Kiddie Park is the oldest children’s amusement park in the country – it was established in 1925 and renovated in 2009! While modern updates have been made, the park has preserved its 1920’s style by maintaining all the original rides, such as the park’s old-fashioned Ferris Wheel and famous hand-carved Herschell Spillman carousel.

Kiddie Park’s original location was near the corner of Broadway and East Mulberry Avenue, but the ever-growing site caused issues for parking and expansion. During the Summer of 2019, San Antonio Zoo landed on an agreement to take over the historic park and started carving a path for its new relocation at the zoo.

San Antonio Zoo will honor and maintain Kiddie Park’s nostalgic look and feel while offering the same experience generations of visitors have come to know and love.

It Works for Any Schedule

You can go for a full day or just a couple of hours. A quick weekday visit can be just as fun as a weekend trip.

It Is Great for All Ages

What to Do First When You Arrive

It helps to have a simple plan. You do not need to map out every step, but knowing a few highlights can make your day smoother.

Start With Congo Falls

One of the biggest crowd favorites is Congo Falls, so many guests like to head there early. At the heart of this area is the Mays Family Silverback Peak, a groundbreaking 70 foot tall gorilla tower that is the first of its kind in the world. The structure allows gorillas to climb from their open air habitat up to an observation area at the top of the cliff wall, where they can take in views of the San Antonio skyline and The Ralston event center.

Check Out Animal Encounters

Look for hands-on moments and guided animal encounters. These are often the most memorable parts of the day.

Ride the Carousel

Do not skip the carousel. It’s a classic stop, especially for families. Even adults end up smiling on this ride.

Make It More Than Just a Visit

Bring Friends or Family

Locals Day is perfect for group plans. Meet up with friends or invite family from nearby. It makes the day feel like a mini outing without much planning.

How to Save Even More

Locals Day already offers a great deal, but there are more ways to make your visit budget-friendly.

Compare standard admission prices with Locals Day deals. The savings can be worth planning ahead.

Locals Day pricing is just $8, so for many San Antonio residents, it ends up being one of the most affordable ways to spend a full day out.

Consider Membership

If you go often, starting a San Antonio Zoo Membership can make sense. You get perks, and you can visit more often without worrying about ticket prices.

What to Bring for a Smooth Visit

A little prep goes a long way.

  • Your proof of residency
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Phone for photos and maps

If you are using Locals Day pricing, do not forget your ID or document. It saves time at the entrance.

Top 10 Things to Do at San Antonio Zoo in 2026

If you’re planning a visit to San Antonio Zoo in 2026, you’re not just planning a walk past animal habitats. You’re stepping into a full year of themed events, family friendly experiences, seasonal celebrations, and can’t miss nights out. Some visits are all about little kid wonder. Some are date night energy. Some are full on party mode.

Here are the top 10 things to do at San Antonio Zoo in 2026, written for real life planning. Pick one, pick a few, or turn it into your new favorite tradition.

1. Explore Congo Falls

Congo Falls is one of the most exciting additions to San Antonio Zoo and easily one of the top experiences to prioritize in 2026. This two acre immersive habitat transports guests into the heart of the African jungle, where lush greenery, waterfalls, and winding pathways create a completely different kind of zoo experience.

The centerpiece is the world’s first 70 foot Mays Family Silverback Peak gorilla tower. This incredible viewing structure gives guests panoramic views while also offering a dynamic climbing environment for the gorillas themselves. Watching these powerful animals move across the tower is something you’ll remember long after your visit.

Beyond the gorillas, Congo Falls includes interactive gardens, immersive landscaping, and roaming spaces designed to feel like a real jungle environment. It’s a place where kids explore, adults linger, and everyone ends up taking photos.

2. Zoorassic Park

From May 30 through September 7, San Antonio Zoo gets a prehistoric takeover with Zoorassic Park, Presented by Bank of Texas. For a limited time, 16 giant animatronic dinosaurs are scattered throughout the zoo, turning a regular summer visit into something that feels bigger, louder, and a lot more dramatic.

Kids will love spotting familiar dinosaurs around the park, and adults will end up just as into it once they’re standing next to a towering T. rex or catching sight of a Velociraptor around the next turn. It adds a fun surprise factor to the day because you’re not just visiting animal habitats. You’re also stepping into a dinosaur filled adventure that feels made for family photos and big reactions.

Since it only runs through Labor Day weekend, this is one of those seasonal events that’s worth planning around. If you’re visiting San Antonio Zoo during the summer, Zoorassic Park is an easy add to the must see list.

3. Take Advantage of Locals Day

Locals Day are one of the best kept secrets for San Antonio residents. On select days throughout the year, Bexar County residents can visit the zoo for just $8 admission.

It’s perfect for spontaneous visits. You can pop in for a few hours, see your favorite animals, and head out without needing to plan an entire day around it.

Many locals use these days to build a tradition of regular zoo visits. Instead of trying to see everything at once, you can explore a different area each time and create your own favorite routine.

4. Let Little Ones Explore on Tiny Tot Tuesday

Tiny Tot Tuesday is built for the smallest explorers and it shows. This is a day for ages 0 to 3, focused on safe discovery, sensory fun, and introducing little ones to the wonders of nature in a calm, kid centered way.

For parents, it’s a win because the pace is naturally slower. You can take breaks, follow your toddler’s curiosity, and actually enjoy the moment instead of speed walking through exhibits with snacks in your pocket and a stroller doing its best.

5. Recharge with Zen Zoo Yoga

Zen Zoo is one of those events that makes you say, wait, yoga at the zoo? And then you try it once and you’re hooked. You’re rolling out your mat, stretching, and starting your day with a calm, energizing session in a setting that feels like a reset button.

It’s a fun way to do something healthy without it feeling like a chore. Plus, it’s a unique morning plan for friends, couples, or anyone who loves experiences that feel different than the usual workout class.

Upcoming Zen Zoo dates include:

June 13

July 11

August 8

September 19

6. Go Big During Spring Break

Spring Break at San Antonio Zoo is peak family adventure mode. With extended hours, you get more time to explore, play, and build a full day around the zoo. It’s a great time to plan your visit if you want the most energy and the most happening atmosphere.

This is the season for comfortable shoes, lots of photos, and letting the kids lead the way. If your crew loves full day outings where everyone sleeps well that night, this one’s for you. And while you’re here, make time to visit Congo Falls. The two-acre immersive exhibit is designed to resemble the lush African jungle, complete with roaming areas, interactive gardens, waterfalls, and the world’s first 70-foot Mays Family Silverback Peak gorilla tower, perfect for watching these incredible animals in action and getting panoramic views.

7. Explore Pollinators

Pollinators are the behind the scenes heroes that move pollen from flower to flower, helping plants make seeds and fruit and supporting the ecosystems that help feed us. Lately, a lot of these species are under pressure from habitat loss and pesticides, which is why conservation matters.

This spring, San Antonio Zoo makes learning about pollinators actually fun. You’ll find giant pollinator sculptures around the park that kids can climb on, plus bite size info that makes it easy to understand why these animals are a big deal. It’s part photo op, part playground, part nature lesson you’ll remember.

8. Party Season Style at Zoo La-La! A Taste of San Antonio, Presented by Higginbotham

Zoo La-La! A Taste of San Antonio, Presented by Higginbotham is the biggest one night, all inclusive 21+ celebration at the zoo, and it’s a total must if you love food festivals. For one unforgettable night, the zoo turns into a citywide tasting party featuring 50+ of San Antonio’s premier restaurants, plus beer and wine samples and entertainment happening across the grounds.

In 2026, it levels up even more with live performances by Tag Team and Digital Underground. You can choose VIP early access or general admission, and it’s the kind of night that feels like a true San Antonio signature event. Pooceeds support the zoo as a nonprofit organization committed to securing a future for wildlife through animal care, conservation, and education.

Please note that Zoo La-La! requires an extra fee.

9. Dress Up and Celebrate at Zoo Boo! Presented by PNC

Zoo Boo! Presented by PNC is Halloween season fun without the too spooky factor. You’ll get fall vibes, festive decorations, and activities designed for all ages. Kids love wearing costumes to the zoo, and parents love that it’s a daytime event that still feels special.

If you’re looking for a family tradition that’s easy to plan and always a hit, Zoo Boo! Presented by PNC is one of the best choices on the calendar.

10. End the Year Bright at Zoo Lights! Powered by CPS Energy

Zoo Lights! Powered by CPS Energy is a holiday classic for a reason. The zoo becomes a sparkling after hours wonderland filled with seasonal displays and family friendly fun. It’s the kind of event that makes everyone slow down, look around, and feel the holiday magic.

This one is perfect for families, couples, and visiting relatives. It’s also a great photo night, so charge your phone and plan for at least one stop where everyone insists on taking the same picture three times.

Plan Your 2026 Zoo Day Like a Pro

Why the Zoo Is a Must Do for San Antonio Spring Break

Spring Break is supposed to feel like a break. No alarms, no packed schedules, and no scrambling to figure out how to keep everyone entertained. If you’re in San Antonio, there’s one destination that checks all the boxes for fun, learning, movement, and memory making. Spring Break at San Antonio Zoo is where outdoor adventure meets hands on discovery, and it’s designed to keep the entire family engaged.

From March 6 through March 22, 2026, the zoo transforms into a Spring Break hotspot with extended hours, new attractions, and interactive experiences you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re planning a full day outing or a spontaneous visit, here’s why the zoo deserves a top spot on your Spring Break calendar.

Extended Hours Turn a Visit Into a Full Day Adventure

One of the biggest Spring Break perks is time. The zoo extends its hours during the break, which gives families more flexibility to explore without feeling rushed. That extra breathing room changes everything.

Instead of speed walking through habitats, you can settle into the day. Kids can revisit favorite animals, take snack breaks without pressure, and follow their curiosity wherever it leads. You might start with giraffes, wander toward big cats, hop on a ride, then circle back to a habitat that sparked excitement earlier.

Longer hours also mean you can plan around your family’s rhythm. Early risers can beat the crowds, while afternoon explorers can arrive later and still enjoy a full experience. The result is a Spring Break outing that feels relaxed instead of jam packed.

Congo Falls Delivers a Wow Moment

Spring Break 2026 comes with a major highlight. Guests will be among the first to experience Congo Falls, the world’s tallest, wildest, and greatest gorilla habitat. It’s an immersive environment designed to bring guests closer to these incredible animals in a meaningful way.

Watching gorillas interact in a thoughtfully designed habitat is captivating for kids and adults alike. Their movements, social behaviors, and sheer presence create moments that pull everyone in. Conversations naturally start. Questions pop up. Curiosity grows.

For many families, Congo Falls will be the centerpiece of their visit. It’s the kind of experience that transforms a zoo trip into something unforgettable and gives kids a story they’re excited to retell.

Pollinators Make Learning Feel Like Play

Spring Break is the perfect time to sneak in learning that doesn’t feel like school. The Pollinators Spring Event does exactly that. Pollinators are the animals that move pollen between flowers, helping plants produce seeds and fruit and supporting ecosystems that contribute to our food supply.

During the event, families wander through interactive displays that highlight why pollinators matter and what threatens their survival. Habitat loss and pesticide use have put pressure on many species, so conservation becomes part of the conversation in a way kids can understand.

The real crowd pleaser is the giant pollinator sculptures scattered throughout the park. Kids can climb, explore, and burn off energy while absorbing bite sized facts along the way. It’s part playground, part science lesson, and part photo opportunity, which is a perfect Spring Break combo.

Rides Add Energy and Excitement

Sometimes Spring Break fun means switching gears from observation to action. The zoo delivers with classic rides that bring a burst of energy into the day.

The Zootennial Carousel is a colorful favorite that gives kids a moment to spin, laugh, and recharge before heading to the next habitat. Nearby, the Zoo Train offers a scenic ride that lets families rest their feet while still enjoying the surroundings.

These rides break up the walking and keep younger visitors engaged. They’re also great reset points when energy dips. A quick carousel ride can turn a tired moment into renewed excitement.

Hands On Animal Encounters Create Core Memories

One of the biggest reasons families return to the zoo is the opportunity to get closer to animals. Spring Break is packed with those wow moments that kids remember long after the visit ends.

Feeding giraffes is a standout experience. Standing eye to eye with such a large, gentle animal sparks amazement and curiosity. Petting kangaroos adds another layer of connection, letting kids interact with wildlife in a safe, supervised setting.

These animal encounters help children move from simply observing animals to feeling connected to them. That connection builds empathy and interest in conservation, all while delivering unforgettable excitement.

Learn While You Explore

San Antonio Zoo offers a variety of learning and education programs for all ages, from immersive animal encounters to guided experiences that explore habitats, conservation, and wildlife science. These programs turn curiosity into confidence, giving kids fun ways to connect with animals and understand the world around them.

Outdoor Exploration Keeps Everyone Moving

Spring Break often comes with a lot of indoor screen time, so the zoo offers a refreshing change. Wide walkways, shaded paths, and open spaces encourage families to move, explore, and enjoy being outside together.

You’re not stuck in one place. The zoo naturally guides you through habitats and interactive zones that keep curiosity high. Kids lead the way, spotting animals, asking questions, and discovering something new around every corner.

That balance of movement and exploration helps burn off Spring Break energy while keeping the day structured without feeling rigid.

Built In Variety Keeps the Day Interesting

The secret to a successful Spring Break outing is variety, and the zoo has it built in. One moment you’re watching gorillas, the next you’re climbing pollinator sculptures, then hopping on a ride or feeding a giraffe.

This constant shift in activity keeps kids engaged and prevents boredom. There’s always something new to look forward to, which makes it easier to stretch your visit into a full day adventure.

Families appreciate that everything lives in one location. You’re not driving across town or juggling multiple tickets. The zoo becomes a one stop destination packed with experiences.

A Shared Experience That Brings Families Together

Spring Break memories aren’t just about what you see. They’re about what you experience together. The zoo creates moments where families laugh, learn, and discover side by side.

Parents watch their kids light up at animal encounters. Kids see adults just as amazed by a towering giraffe or playful gorilla. Those shared reactions build memories that stick long after the week ends.

It’s quality time without forced structure. The day unfolds naturally, guided by curiosity and excitement.

Make the Zoo Your Spring Break Tradition

Spring Break at San Antonio Zoo blends outdoor fun, learning, and hands-on adventure into one unforgettable experience. With extended hours, the debut of Congo Falls, interactive Pollinators activities, rides, and animal encounters, every visit feels packed with discovery.

If you want to make the most of Spring Break and keep the fun going all year, becoming a San Antonio Zoo Member is the move. Membership makes it easy to pop in for quick visits, come back for seasonal events, and turn the zoo into your go to family tradition long after March is over.

Love Is in the Air at the San Antonio Zoo: Valentine’s Day Events

Valentine’s season is the perfect excuse to get out, try something fun, and make a few memories, and San Antonio Zoo is bringing the vibes in 2026. Whether you are planning a cute date night, a fun night out with friends, or just looking for something different to do this winter, there are a few events you will definitely want on your calendar.

From flirty after hours parties to special discounted days for locals, San Antonio Zoo is turning up the charm and giving everyone a reason to fall in love with zoo days all over again.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening.

Meet Your Next Ex: A Valentine’s Party With Villa Energy

Coupling up is optional, connections are encouraged, and the vibes are very much main character energy.

San Antonio Zoo is bringing serious villa inspiration to Valentine’s season with Meet Your Next Ex, an adults only after hours party designed for singles, couples, and anyone living in the “it’s complicated” category.

This isn’t your average zoo visit. Picture music, drinks, entertainment, and unexpected encounters unfolding around every corner while you explore the zoo after dark. It’s playful, social, and built for people who want to laugh, flirt, vibe, or just enjoy the drama from a very safe and very fun distance.

How It Works

At check in, guests will receive color coded badge ribbons to help signal what they are looking for in a fun, respectful, and inclusive way.

Ribbon options include:

  • Blue: Looking for men
  • Yellow: Looking for women
  • Green: Looking for any
  • Red: Not interested or wing person

You can keep things light, start conversations, or just enjoy the energy of the night.

Dress like you are headed to the villa, grab a drink, and let the evening take you where it wants to go.

This event is perfect for singles who want to meet new people, couples who love a fun date night, friend groups looking for something different, and anyone who enjoys a social night out.

Get Revenge With Cry Me a Cockroach

If Valentine’s season has you feeling a little petty, San Antonio Zoo has a tradition that keeps things funny, harmless, and surprisingly meaningful.

Cry Me a Cockroach returns with lower prices, because a little payback should not break the bank. You can symbolically name a cockroach, rodent, or veggie after an ex or not so special someone, and San Antonio Zoo will feed it to an animal resident.

Here’s how it works:

  • $5 cockroach
  • $5 veggies
  • $15 rodent

Each donation supports wildlife conservation, animal care, and education programs at San Antonio Zoo, so your moment of catharsis also helps make a real impact. With every donation, participants receive:

  • A downloadable Valentine’s Day card to share with friends or former flames
  • A special Valentine’s Day video featuring one of San Antonio Zoo’s popular animal residents

Get your revenge in the most zoo approved way possible.

Date Night Ideas at San Antonio Zoo

Valentine’s plans don’t have to mean loud restaurants and long waits for a table. San Antonio Zoo offers a fun, relaxed setting that makes it easy to spend time together while still having plenty to do and talk about.

Here are a few easy ways to turn a zoo visit into a great date night or daytime date.

Walk and Talk Through Your Favorite Habitats

Strolling through animal habitats gives you built in conversation starters and plenty of chances to slow down and enjoy the moment. It’s easy to keep things light, laugh together, and take your time without feeling rushed.

Share Snacks and Sweet Treats

Food always makes a date better. Grab something to snack on, split a treat, and take a break in one of the shaded seating areas. It’s casual, comfortable, and way less stressful than planning a full sit down dinner.

Ride Attractions Together

If your visit includes ride access, hopping on a ride together adds a playful break to the night. It’s a great way to mix in some laughs and make the evening feel more like an experience than just a walk.

End With Sunset Views

Evening visits can be especially nice when the sun starts to set and the zoo begins to quiet down. It’s a great time for photos, slower walks, and wrapping up the night on a calm note.

Why Valentine’s Season Is a Great Time to Visit

Winter and early spring are some of the nicest times to explore San Antonio Zoo. Cooler temperatures make walking more comfortable, animals are often more active, and events bring an extra layer of energy to the park.

Between romantic after hours parties and daytime visits with discounted admission, Valentine’s season gives you plenty of ways to enjoy the zoo in whatever way fits your mood.

You can go bold with a social night out, keep things cozy with a daytime visit, or do both and really make the most of the season.

Celebrate Love, Fun, and a Little Wild Energy

Valentine’s season is a great time to plan a visit, try something new, and make a few memories at San Antonio Zoo. From Meet Your Next Ex to Locals Day, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the zoo in 2026, no matter what your plans look like.

If you know you’ll want to come back for more events, more animal moments, and more spontaneous zoo days, a Membership is an easy way to keep the fun going all year. Explore San Antonio Zoo Membership options and choose the level that fits your visit style, then enjoy unlimited visits and year round perks whenever you are ready for your next zoo day.

Zoo Membership vs. Day Tickets: Which Saves You More in 2026?

A visit to San Antonio Zoo is always a good idea. From favorite animals to rides, snacks, and special events, there is so much to enjoy every time you walk through the gates. The only real question is how you want to experience it in 2026. Do you plan a single visit, or do you give yourself the option to come back again and again with a Membership?

Both options are great. Day tickets are perfect for a one time trip, and memberships are designed for guests who want more flexibility, more visits, and more perks throughout the year. Let’s take a look at how each option works, what Membership includes, and how the numbers can add up in your favor if you plan to return.

Day Tickets: Simple And Easy For A Single Visit

If you’re planning one Zoo day in 2026, day tickets are a simple and easy choice.

Standard Adult Admission: As low as $8 per visit

Day tickets are great for:

  • Out of town guests
  • Families planning a special occasion visit
  • Anyone who wants a one time Zoo adventure

You pick your date, enjoy the day, and head home with great memories and lots of photos.

But if you start thinking about coming back later in the year, that is where Membership becomes really appealing.

Why So Many Guests Choose Membership

San Antonio Zoo Membership is all about flexibility and value. Instead of planning one big day, you can enjoy San Antonio Zoo throughout the year in a way that fits your schedule and energy level.

With Membership, you can:

  • Visit for an hour or stay all afternoon
  • Come back for favorite animals, events, or cooler weather days
  • Drop in more often without buying tickets each time

It turns Zoo visits into something you can enjoy whenever the mood hits.

How Membership Can Save You Money Over Time

Here is how it compares for one adult:

  • Two visits with day tickets: $60
  • Pay For A Day Membership: $44.99
  • Three visits with day tickets: $90
  • Advocate Membership: $84
  • Six visits with day tickets: $180

And that doesn’t even include extra savings from free parking, food discounts, or event discounts. If you’re visiting with more than one person, the value of Membership becomes even stronger.

Why Families Especially Love Membership

Families often choose Membership because it makes Zoo days easier and more relaxed.

Instead of feeling like every visit needs to be an all day event, you can:

  • Visit for shorter trips
  • Leave when kids get tired
  • Come back another day without buying tickets again

Kids also love seeing animals grow and change over time, and Membership lets them build that connection throughout the year. Add in perks like ride access, birthday party discounts, and Zoo Camp registration, and it becomes a fun way to enjoy the Zoo as part of your regular routine.

Choosing What Works Best For You

The best choice really comes down to how you plan to visit.

Day tickets are great if:

  • You are planning one special visit

Membership is a great fit if:

  • You plan to visit more than once

Step Into Congo Falls: Inside the Zoo’s Immersive Two Acre Wildlife Habitat

Congo Falls at San Antonio Zoo is a bold new chapter in the zoo’s 111 year history. This world class habitat brings gorillas back to San Antonio in a way that feels thoughtful, immersive, and deeply connected to conservation. From towering climbing structures to flowing waterfalls and lush browsing gardens, Congo Falls sets a new standard for animal care and guest experience.

The moment you arrive, it is clear this is not a traditional exhibit. It feels like a place where wildlife leads the way and guests are invited to observe, learn, and connect.

Meet the Gorillas of Congo Falls

Congo Falls is home to two troops of incredible gorillas! Our family troop consists of Ajari, Anaka, Andi, and Merry Leigh. B’Wenzi, Juba, and Shana are in our bachelor group!

You might see one lounging in the shade, another climbing high above the habitat, or a quiet moment where two gorillas sit side by side just taking it all in. There is no set schedule or perfect viewing moment, and that is part of what makes it special. You are seeing real behavior unfold in real time.

The Gorilla Tower That Changes the View

One of the most striking features of Congo Falls is the Mays Family Silverback Peak. This revolutionary 70 foot tall gorilla tower is the first of its kind in the world. It allows gorillas to climb from their open air habitat up to an observation area at the top of the cliff wall.

From this elevated space, gorillas can take in panoramic views of the San Antonio skyline and The Ralston, the zoo’s event center. It is a powerful reminder that animals deserve complexity and choice in their environments.

For guests, Silverback Peak offers a rare opportunity to see gorillas at different elevations and angles. Watching a gorilla climb and perch high above the habitat adds an entirely new dimension to the experience.

A Habitat Built to Inspire Natural Behavior

Congo Falls was designed with animal behavior at the forefront. The habitat features interactive browsing gardens, climbing structures, shaded resting areas, and flowing waterfalls that mimic elements found in Central African environments.

These features encourage exploration, problem solving, and physical activity. Gorillas can choose how they move through the space, where they rest, and how they interact with their surroundings. This level of choice is essential to modern animal care and contributes to both physical and mental wellbeing.

For guests, the result is a more engaging visit. You are not looking at a static scene. You are witnessing life unfold in real time.

Multiple Vantage Points for Guests

One of the most exciting aspects of Congo Falls is how many ways there are to experience it. Elevated viewpoints, ground level paths, and glass viewing areas allow guests to observe gorillas from different perspectives.

This design keeps the experience fresh as you move through the habitat. You may see a gorilla resting near the water from one angle, then spot another climbing high above moments later. It encourages you to slow down, look closely, and stay curious.

Photography lovers will especially appreciate the natural backdrops and unobstructed views that make it easier to capture meaningful moments.

ZooBand Enhances the Congo Falls Experience

Exploring Congo Falls is even more engaging with ZooBand. This wearable technology helps guests move through the habitat with ease while unlocking interactive experiences along the way.

One standout feature is a creative digital station where ZooBand activates a large screen and drawing pad. Guests can create their own artwork, which is instantly transformed into gorilla-inspired art displayed on the screen.

An Unexpected Link to San Antonio History

During the construction of Congo Falls, crews made an unexpected historical discovery. Excavation revealed limestone from the same quarry that supplied stone for the construction of the Alamo more than 300 years ago.

This finding adds a meaningful layer to the habitat. It connects Congo Falls not only to wildlife conservation but also to San Antonio’s deep and rich history. Few places offer such a powerful blend of past, present, and future within one space.

Conservation at the Core

Congo Falls is rooted in conservation. Gorillas in the wild face serious threats from habitat loss, illegal mining, and environmental pressures. San Antonio Zoo uses this habitat as a platform to educate guests about these challenges and inspire action.

One of the most impactful initiatives connected to Congo Falls is Gorillas on the Line. This global cell phone recycling campaign is led by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in partnership with eco cell.

The program raises awareness about the connection between everyday electronics and gorilla conservation. Mining for coltan, a material used in cell phones and other devices, contributes to habitat destruction in regions where critically endangered gorillas live.

How You Can Help Gorillas in the Wild

One easy way guests can make a difference is by taking part in Gorillas on the Line. This global cell phone recycling program connects everyday electronics to gorilla conservation.

Mining for materials used in phones and devices contributes to habitat loss in areas where gorillas live. By recycling old phones, tablets, chargers, and small electronics, you help reduce that impact.

San Antonio Zoo has a drop off station near the Congo Falls entrance, and staff members are always happy to point you in the right direction. It is a simple action that supports a bigger cause.
